EA is planning on starting the process to close down servers for a few old classic games. In the past several years, online services for older games have been shut down by Electronic Arts and other publishers, and it doesn’t appear that this will stop anytime soon.
On its website, EA listed every game that will be discontinued. Favorites like Mirror’s Edge, the 2010 NBA Jam remake, and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 are on the list.
Even while it’s unlikely that these games’ server closures would seriously affect gamers, this is still a sad development for gamers. There will be a few impacts when the servers are shut down such as it will shut down the multiplayer servers for any game that supports the functionality, even if there is still an active community for games like Red Alert 3.
It will hinder you from earning any achievements that require you to play online; NBA Jam includes a few of these, so once the servers go down, you won’t be able to unlock them again.
According to EA, removing games entirely is “never easy”, but it becomes inevitable when newer games are launched.
