The PS5 Pro is in development, and Insider Gaming sources have confirmed this. A late 2024 release date has been proposed as a possible target.
An updated PlayStation 5 with a removable disc drive is expected to be released later this year, according to a previous Insider Gaming story. It’s anticipated that this new model will phase out the current PlayStation 5 to save down on production and shipping costs. Despite persistent rumours to the contrary, this is not the PS5 Pro version. The detachable disc drive console is “just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation,” according to one source. There are few specifics available regarding PS5 specifications. Sony Interactive Entertainment, however, appears to be attempting to “accelerate” ray tracing performance in video games, according to a recently published patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny (noticed by @Onion00048).
According to Insider Gaming, the PS6, the PlayStation’s sixth generation, won’t probably be available until at least 2028. This would align the console release calendar for the current generation with those of the previous generations. Industry insider Jeff Grubb said in February that Sony intended to hold a new PlayStation Showcase “before E3” on the Game Trash Decides podcast. Even while Insider Gaming is unable to confirm this rumour at the moment, we believe it is highly likely that a showcase will soon be held to display games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and discuss the new hardware the company will be releasing towards the end of 2023.
It remains to be seen whether the PS5 Pro makes sense. Developers still need to release previous generations of consoles in order to increase sales of the current generation, which appears to have only recently stabilized as a result of chip shortages. A significant phase-out of previous-generation titles in the spring of 2024 seems plausible given that Sony anticipates a record-breaking FY23 for console unit sales (of roughly 30.5 million units).
