The new Fortnite Unreal Engine 5.1 update arrives only three weeks after the launch of the new engine. It’s a big graphical improvement for the all-time favorite game, but it also indicates that some older Consoles won’t be able to run it anymore.
Fortnite already has one of PS5’s best graphics, and with Epic Games at the lead, you should expect even further improvement. With the release of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1, the developer has merged next-gen Unreal Engine 5.1 features so that the reformed Fortnite Island would look better than before.
The update suggests using a graphics card with DirectX 12 support. If you want the best possible visual experience, however, the developers advise using a graphics processing unit (GPU) like the GeForce RTX 2080 or the Radeon RX 5700.
The latest version of Unreal Engine, 5.1, adds compatibility with a number of technologies. These include Nanite, Lumen, Virtual Shadow Maps, and Temporal Super Resolution.
Nanite
Nanite enables complex geometrical patterns for infrastructure design. Specifically, each brick, stone, wood plank, and wall trim is sculpted and produced from millions of polygons in real-time. The natural landscapes also have a lot of fine detail.
Nanite is one of the upgrades that enhance the building’s design. The company claimed that each brick, stone, wood plank, and wall trim was modeled, and they created buildings from millions of polygons in real-time.
Lumen
You may get realistic ray-traced reflections on shiny surfaces and water using lumen reflections. There will be stunning interiors with bounce lighting, and the characters will adapt to the lights in their surroundings.
This is supplemented by Lumen, which enables ray-traced reflections and real-time global illumination at 60fps.
Virtual Shadow Maps
With virtual shadow maps, you can cast realistic shadows. The self-shadowing of characters is highly accurate, and each brick, leaf, and modeled detail will cast its own unique shadow.
Temporal Super Resolution
With Fortnite’s Temporal Super Resolution, players can enjoy smooth gameplay and better visuals. There is a significant improvement in the quality of shadows with the new lighting, and the promise of “high-quality graphics at a high fps” is made with the deployment of Temporal Super Resolution.
Remember that these enhancements are exclusive to the PS5 and will not be found in the game’s PS4 or PS4 Pro versions. However, we think that the result is beautiful.
